Mick Schumacher could join Mercedes after being ‘too expensive’ for Haas
Mick Schumacher’s appearance at this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be his last for Haas, who are set to drop the German after two years with the team.
The son of seven-time world champion Michael has endured a tough second season in F1, which started with him having a host of crashes, landing Haas with a series of hefty repair bills. Schumacher has shown flashes of pace at times but not consistently and the pressure on him intensified as teammate Kevin Magnussen secured a shock pole position for the sprint race at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, Schumacher qualified at the back, although he did have an excellent sprint race, moving up to 12th. He then finished out of points in Sunday’s main race.

However, it appears the decision on his future had already been made with Haas set to replace an inexperienced driver with an experienced one in the shape of Hulkenberg, who hasn’t had a full-time drive since leaving Renault at the end of 2019, although he has raced for Racing Point/Aston Martin as a stand-in.
German title Bild reports that Haas have made the decision because Schumacher was “developing too slowly and was too expensive”. The reports adds that this season alone Schumacher has cost the team 3million euros in crash damage.
However, all may not be lost for the 23-year-old, who has been linked with a third driver role at Mercedes, where his father spent the final three years of his F1 career.

Mercedes are looking for a reserve driver after Nyck de Vries secured a full-time drive with AlphaTauri for 2023. Daniel Ricciardo, who has been dropped by McLaren, has also been linked with a Mercedes role, but the Australian may now face competition from Schumacher.
Asked about Schumacher over the weekend in Brazil, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said: “I make no secret of the fact that the Schumacher family belongs to Mercedes and that we appreciate Mick very much.”
