Boxing fans will be delighted to hear Tyson Fury confess he needs to fight Anthony Joshua before he hangs up his gloves for good.

The 'Gypsy King' announced his retirement after stopping Dillian Whyte in the sixth round of their April showdown but is now set to face Derek Chisora for a third time on December 3. Fury and Joshua are long-term rivals who have come close to materialising a clash on several occasions, only for the fixture to fall apart each time.

Having dominated his trilogy against Deontay Wilder and claimed just about every prize in heavyweight boxing, one might forgive Fury for bowing out at 34 years of age. However, the Mancunian has said he has a personal drive to give British boxing the bout it's yearned for in modern times.

"I don't think I can retire today because I need that Joshua fight," Fury told hosts Jake Humphrey and Damian Hughes on the High Performance Podcast. "We have been trying to make that fight for years. It's the fight that people want to see. It's the fight that I want to see as a boxing fan."

Fury still holds the WBC world title and will put the belt on the line when he faces off against Chisora at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next month. Joshua, meanwhile, has no titles to his credit after losing the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO belts to Oleksandr Usyk last year (before also losing the rematch in August).

Many have suggested it would make more sense for Fury to face Usyk in the hopes of unifying the belts to further establish his status as one of the sport's greats. However, time is also of the essence if a clash between Fury and Joshua is ever to come to fruition.

"The last four or five years, there's been this three-headed monster: me, [Deontay] Wilder, Joshua," added Fury. "Joshua and Wilder have been slain, and I'm the last one standing.

"All of a sudden, you've got some new people coming up now. You've got Joe Joyce coming, Daniel Dubois, Usyk's gatecrashed the party! So now there's all this new blood that wasn't there five years ago, and it's like, 'Can you beat this person? Can you beat that person?'

"I think it would be an absolute dying travesty if me and Joshua didn't fight in this era."
