Sadio Mane’s World Cup dream finally over as injury rules him out completely

Sadio Mane has been ruled out of the World Cup after failing to recover from an injury in time for the tournament.

The Bayern Munich winger limped off with a leg injury during the club's 6-1 win over Werder Bremen last week but was later included in Senegal's squad for the tournament. However, it has now been confirmed that he will play no part in Qatar, with the injury too serious for him to recover in time to be involved.

After the match against Bremen, the German champions announced that Mane had suffered an injury “to the head of his right fibula”.

Manager Julian Nagelsmann explained: "He took a knock to the head of his tibia. It's always uncomfortable. He has to have an X-ray. I hope nothing is wrong.

"I didn't see him after the game, I hope it's not a big injury. But I don't know at the moment. We'll see tomorrow and then give an update."

National team head coach Aliou Cisse had also been confident Mane would be able to play a part at the tournament, revealing last week: "We are monitoring the situation and we sent a doctor from the federation.

"On Thursday, Sadio spent the whole day in Munich before travelling to Austria for further tests. The good news is that he does not need an operation.

"It is important to continue to monitor his injury and hope that in two or three weeks there is a change. We will give everything to have Sadio back."

Mane has been a key man for his country in recent years and was a member of the squad which appeared at the last World Cup in Russia four years ago.

He also helped guide Senegal to glory at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, scoring the winning spot-kick in the final as they beat Egypt on penalties.

The Lions of Teranga will begin their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on Monday before matches against host nation Qatar and Ecuador in group A.
