Most boxing fans would surely agree Tyson Fury is among the finest fighters of his generation, but the heavyweight icon has work to do before he can be considered Britain's best.

That's according to a poll posed by welterweight champion-turned-analyst Paulie Malignaggi, who asked his 205,000 Twitter followers to name "the best UK boxer of all time." The replies varied but showed a pattern in favouring fighters from past eras, with another heavyweight in particular stealing much of the attention.

Although Lennox Lewis retired with two more losses on his record than Fury, the London-born talent boasts famous triumphs over legendary figures in Mike Tyson (2002) and Evander Holyfield (1999). Boxing manager Sam Jones was among those who ranked 'The Lion' as his top British boxer, while former WBC cruiserweight titleholder Tony Bellew put Welsh icon Joe Calzaghe at the top of his list.

Who do you think is the best British boxer of all time? Let us know in the comments section.

While some noted Lewis' two defeats as a blemish on his legacy, @Brad_ShepardN7 highlighted he avenged both losses against Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman. "He won both rematches, so he's beaten everyone he ever faced," he tweeted. "He is maybe the most underrated heavyweight boxer of all-time."

Another user named @manrambler credited Fury, Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton and David Haye but insisted there's no "really compelling argument for any of them to be above Lewis." As well as reigning as the undisputed heavyweight king for a time, Lewis holds one edge over many of his peers in that he also clinched an Olympic gold medal representing Canada at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul.

Calzaghe was a frequent mention in the replies to Malignaggi's tweet, which is unsurprising given he retired with a 46-0 record and notched wins over Jeff Lacy, Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins. Some suggested that latter duo in particular were well past their best by the time they faced Calzaghe, however, and @The_PaulSykes went so far as to claim 'The Pride of Wales' "never beat a prime world class fighter in his career."

One curveball selection saw another Welsh contender in Jimmy Wilde—the first official world flyweight champion, who fought professionally between 1911 and 1923—nominated by some nostalgists. Twitter user @topclassboxing said 'The Tylorstown Terror' topped the billing "by some distance," boasting a professional record comprising some 150 fights (131-3-1-8NC), including seven 'newspaper decisions'.

Fury, 34, cut short his brief retirement to set up a third meeting with Derek Chisora on December 3, when he'll put his WBC heavyweight crown on the line at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Having already defeated 'War' in two previous meetings, it's unlikely the fixture will match up against his trilogy win over Deontay Wilder or his unanimous-decision win against Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.

The Gypsy King recently said he 'needs' to fight long-time rival Anthony Joshua before he can feel satisfied in retirement. Putting an end to that feud would be one way of boosting his legacy in the debate regarding Britain's best of all time, but even that may not be enough to make him No. 1 for much of the boxing community.
