Bruno Fernandes channelled his inner Donald Trump during his frosty encounter with Manchester United and Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, according to an expert.

Former US president Trump has garnered a reputation for belittling opponents with his overt displays of power over the years. And Fernandes took a leaf out of the controversial politician's book when he bumped into Ronaldo, by showing his comrade who's boss through body language, the expert claimed.

Ronaldo put strain on their relationship when he threw United under the bus in his contentious interview with Piers Morgan, putting Fernandes in a precarious position. And Fernandes showed Ronaldo that he didn't appreciate his comments when they bumped into each other on international duty ahead of the World Cup.

Fernandes momentarily appeared to ignore the 37-year-old before giving him a weak handshake and lightly brushing his elbow, then swiftly moving on, leaving Ronaldo bemused. And expert Darren Stanton, reckons Fernandes was exerting his power over Ronaldo in the situation like Trump.

In a detailed analysis of the awkward encounter, Stanton explained to Online Betting Guide OLBG: "Bruno Fernandes is displaying a power gesture – it's a Donald Trump move. As Bruno Fernandes walks into the dressing room, the way he is walking suggests he's about to walk past Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Ronaldo then returns a weak handshake and then Bruno places his left hand on his elbow. This is a power gesture. If you watch footage of Donald Trump, or other politicians, it's an attempt to make the other person look weak and themselves more powerful.

"Bruno also returns with a weak handshake after he places his left hand on Ronaldo‘s elbow. This is a power gesture, and if you watch any footage of Donald Trump or other politicians, they are trying to make the other person look weak. This is a power move."

Ronaldo seemed to be shocked by Fernandes' apparent 'disrespectful' greeting as he watches his compatriot warmly embrace the fellow squad members. And Stanton believes that Fernandes' actions were to show Ronaldo that he's no longer the top dog for club or country.

He added: "Cristiano Ronaldo looks in disbelief at the disrespect – Bruno is saying 'your time's up'. Bruno is trying to make Ronaldo seem the weaker man.

"Ronaldo's expression is one of disbelief because he knows it is a weak greeting, compared to the other ways he goes around to the players and gives them hugs. It is a totally disrespectful gesture, as if to say your time is up and you're not number one anymore."

It remains to be seen how the pair will interact on the pitch during the World Cup. But luckily for both, they won't have to put up with each other for much longer with Ronaldo halfway out the United exit already, and it's likely to be his last World Cup as he'll be 41 when the next one comes around, a year after he plans to retire.
