Cristiano Ronaldo has opened the door on potentially teaming with eternal rival Lionel Messi at some point in the near future.

During his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, the Manchester United forward was quizzed about his relationship with Messi – the man he's shared the world stage with for over a decade-and-a-half.

Ronaldo sang the Argentine's praises, describing him as a "top person" and "a guy who does great things for football", and when Morgan asked him if he liked the idea of joining him at PSG, his response was eye-opening.

"Everything is possible in football so why not?" Ronaldo said, before joking: "For sure they will sell a lot of shirts."

Despite their years of intense rivalry, Ronaldo says he thinks of Messi "like a team-mate" and said he'd be open to having the PSG forward round for dinner sometime.

"I have great relationship with him. I'm not a friend of his in terms of, the guy who was with you in your house, speaking on the phone, no, but it's like a team-mate. He’s a guy that I really respect the way he always speak about me … [he's a] great guy who does great things for football."

Only two men, other than Messi and Ronaldo, have won the Ballon d'Or since 2007. Their era of dominance is unprecedented in football in that they've maintained such elite standards for such long periods of time – and they've done it side-by-side.

Both are heading into what will surely be their final World Cup tournaments, with the trophy being the only blot on their otherwise impeccable record. In effect, it'll be the last time either man will have the chance to outdo the other.

Here's to one heck of an era.
