David de Gea must accept slash to his astronomical wages to extend Man Utd stay

David de Gea will be forced to take a significant pay cut to extend his stay at Manchester United.

The Spanish stopper’s current £375,000–a-week Old Trafford contract finishes at the end of this campaign. The Reds hierarchy do have an option to keep him for another year and would like to exercise it. Yet they have no intention of doing so on his present salary.

They want to slash De Gea’s weekly wages, which make him the second highest earner at the club behind Cristiano Ronaldo, by at least £100,000.

That would save them the best part of £5million annually. So far there have been no talks between United and De Gea’s representatives about his future beyond the season.

But the former Atletico Madrid man, 32, is keen to remain at the club he joined in 2011. He made that clear last month ahead of his 500th game. Despite some difficult spells during his time in England, De Gea has persistently defied his critics by bouncing back to his very best.

That happened again this season. In August, after a shocking display in United’s 4-0 thumping at Brentford, many predicted he was a goner because he did not suit the passing game being introduced by new United boss Erik ten Hag.

However, De Gea has responded by producing some sensational performances between the posts. Two weeks ago, he was pivotal in a vital 1-0 victory over West Ham as he pulled off three stunning saves in the final stages.

They were a timely reminder that, while no longer part of the Spain national squad, De Gea, with 45 caps, is still a world-class keeper and shot-stopper.

Those sort of displays have also helped win over Dutch coach Ten Hag. The Reds supremo has told the board to re-sign De Gea – but accepts that will only happen if he agrees to take a big hit on his pay packet.
