Christian Horner highlights Mercedes upgrades after being given big welcome by Sky Sports

Team principal Christian Horner was back on Sky Sports at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after Red Bull’s well-documented bust-up with the channel.

Red Bull refused to talk to the broadcaster at the Mexican Grand Prix following comments made by pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz back at the United States Grand Prix, where he said Lewis Hamilton had been “robbed” of last year’s title, which went to Max Verstappen instead.

However, following talks between Sky and Red Bull, it is business as normal, with Verstappen speaking to reporter Rachel Brookes before and after the sprint race, which was won by the Mercedes of George Russell ahead of Carlos Sainz and Hamilton. Verstappen was back in fourth after the decision to run the yellow-striped medium tyres backfired.

For the first time since the row, Horner spoke to Sky after the race and he was given a big welcome by presenter Simon Lazenby who, referring to the bust-up, said: “Christian, nice of you to talk to us, again.”

Asked whether Red Bull’s tyre decision or the resurgence of Mercedes was behind the result, Horner said: “It’s a combination of both. They’ve been heavily developing this car through the season. We’ve seen the steps throughout the year and they’ve been getting closer and closer.

“So it’s no real surprise that they’ve had this performance with the amount of parts they’ve been bringing in and developing. George has done a great job.

I think the soft tyre would have been better for us to today but the advantage is that we take that extra set [of soft tyres] into the race. So what we gave up today strategically, we hopefully might get back tomorrow.”

With Sainz being hit with a five-place grid penalty following an engine change, Hamilton will join Russell on the front row. There were question marks over Hamilton’s position after he was called to face the stewards over a potential start-line infringement.

However, it has been confirmed the seven-time world champion will not serve a penalty.
