Wayne Rooney has been left 'bemused' by Cristiano Ronaldo's comments during a stinging interview in which he took aim at his former Manchester United team-mate.

Ronaldo has sat down for a tell-all interview with Piers Morgan following a torrid season in which Erik ten Hag has often left him out of his starting XI favouring younger stars, which will be aired across Wednesday and Thursday (November 15 and 16).

In one section of the TalkTV chat, Ronaldo said that Rooney might have criticised him over the past few months out of jealousy before saying that he looks better than his former pal.

Sky Sports now report that Rooney has been left bemused by the criticism, reiterating that Ronaldo is in the top two players in the world.

He added that he simply shared his thoughts that Ronaldo should move on from United – and that he should've accepted the situation under the new manager.

The report added that Rooney feels no animosity towards his former Old Trafford colleague – and won't be offering a full statement on the matter.

Ronaldo had said: "I don't know why he criticises me so badly… probably because he finished his career and I'm still playing at high level."

Then added: "I’m not going to say that I'm looking better than him. Which is true…"

Rooney and Ronaldo played together on 205 occasions for the Red Devils, combining for 25 goals and winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League among other trophies.

Rooney had recently said on talkSPORT of his former colleague: "Him and Messi are arguably the two best players of all-time and you can go either way with that, whatever way you decide.

"But I just think the things he has done from the start of season, it is not acceptable for Manchester United.

"I've seen Roy Keane defending him. Roy wouldn’t accept that. Roy wouldn’t accept that at all."
