Cristiano Ronaldo says eight other Man Utd players refused to come on as sub too

Cristiano Ronaldo says he regrets defying Erik ten Hag by refusing to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last month, but claims he isn't the only Manchester United star to have pulled the stunt during his second spell there.

In his explosive sit-down interview with Piers Morgan, the 37-year-old revealed that eight of his team-mates did the same thing in pre-season against Rayo Vallecano, and suggested the only reason why everybody focuses on him is because he's the "black sheep".

"Me and eight players [refused to come on as a substitute], but they mention only my name [in pre-season]," Ronaldo told Morgan. "Last year, many players did the same … but they only speak about the black sheep which is me."

Ronaldo said that he'd apologised to Ten Hag and that he considered the saga "closed", but explained that he felt "provoked" by the manager for only offering him a brief a run-out in a game that was already won.

"Piers I will be honest with you, it's something that I regret to left from the stadium. Probably, or maybe no, I don't know. It's difficult to tell you 100% but let's say I regret, but in the same way I felt provoked by the coach," he said.

"A coach to put me in three minutes in a game. Sorry, I'm not that kind of player. I know what I can give to the team."

Ronaldo put his future at Old Trafford in serious jeopardy after walking down the tunnel and leaving the stadium during the final few minutes of United's 2-0 win over Tottenham in October.

It was the second time he'd left a match early under Ten Hag, having done so after getting hooked at half-time during a pre-season clash with Rayo Vallecano – the only warm-up game he featured in having spent most of the summer on personal leave.
