The singers application to trademark the moniker “Queen of Christmas” has been rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Seems obvious to many that the Grammy winner is the monarch of the festive seeing seeing as she’s become synonymous with the festive period since the release of her 1994 track, All I Want for Christmas Is You.

The trademark would have given her the legal right to stop others from using the title on music and merchandise.

Carey also failed in attempts to trademark the abbreviation “QOC ” and “Princess Christmas”.

‘All I Want for Christmas’ finally reached number one in the UK singles chart in 2020 because it became customary for Carey to promote her mid-90s studio album – Merry Christmas – throughout the last two months of the year.

Last year just days before the holiday the chart-topping track had more than 81 million streams and had been downloaded around 14,800 times, according to Billboard.

Carey’s company Lotion LLC applied for the yuletide trademark last year, leading to another singer, Elizabeth Chan, putting in a legal challenge in August, in an attempt to block her from obtaining the registration.

When Chan was profiled by the New Yorker in 2018, they used the headline: ‘The Queen of Christmas,’ and was described as ‘America’s most successful, and perhaps only, full-time Christmas-song singer-slash-composer.’

Speaking on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Mariah insisted she never chose the festive moniker herself and explained: “That was other people, and I just want to humbly say that I don’t consider myself that.

“I’m someone that loves Christmas, that happened to be blessed to write All I want For Christmas Is You. And a lot of other Christmas songs. And let’s face it, you know, everybody’s faith is what it is. But to me, Mary is the Queen of Christmas.”
