The 1982 World Cup semi-final between West Germany and France is widely considered one of the best matches ever played on the world stage.

It had six goals – three for both sides – a thrilling penalty shoot-out, and the worst tackle the World Cup has ever seen. With the tie still balanced precariously at 1-1, Michel Platini released Patrick Battiston through on goal, with a chance to nudge Les Blues ahead.

Battison reached the ball ahead of the West German shot-stopper Harald Schumacher, but that didn't stop the keeper. Schumacher left the Frenchman sprawling on the turf after a cynical body check.

The ball trickled just wide of the goal as Battiston lay unconsciousness on the ground – but the referee saw nothing wrong with the challenge. Schumacher was allowed to stay on the pitch and no penalty was awarded.

It only later emerged the true damage Schumacher had caused when his hip clattered into Battiston's chest and head. The Frenchman had needed oxygen when he was led off the pitch, due to the three broken ribs he had suffered.

The attacker also lost two teeth in the challenge and he suffered severe damage to his back.

Platini admitted after the game he feared the worse for his stricken team-mate: "He had no pulse. He looked so pale." While Battiston later said: "All I know is that Schumacher was someone who wanted to win at all costs and he went way over the top that evening."

While Schumacher reportedly told the French after the game, upon hearing Battiston had lost some teeth, "I will pay for the crowns."
