Joe Lycett has shredded £10,000 after "gay icon" David Beckham failed to quit his reported £10million Qatar deal.

The comedian set Beckham a deadline earlier this week to withdraw from his role as an ambassador for the World Cup, which gets underway on Sunday afternoon. With the former England and Manchester United star failing to back out of the deal before Lycett's deadline, he has now put the cash through a shredder.

As the clock ticked down towards the cut-off point, a countdown could even be viewed online through a website that Lycett had set up as part of the deal.

In a video uploaded to social media, Lycett – dressed in a rainbow-coloured turkey costume – can be seen picking up the money and dropping it into a shredder, which then shoots the scraps of the cash onto the floor.

Lycett then stands in front of the machine and curtsies at the camera before walking back out of shot. He captioned the clip: "A platform for progress."

Earlier this week, Lycett set out his proposal to Beckham on Instagram, explaining: "This is a message to David Beckham. I consider you, along with Kim Woodburn and Monty Don, to be a gay icon.

“You’re the first premiership footballer to do shoots with gay magazines like Attitude, to speak openly about your gay fans, and you married a Spice Girl, which is the gayest thing a human being can do.

“But now it’s 2022. And you signed a reported £10m deal with Qatar to be their ambassador during the FIFA World Cup. Qatar was voted as one of the worst places in the world to be gay.

"Homosexuality is illegal, punishable by imprisonment, and if you’re Muslim, possibly even death.”

Lycett had pledged to donate the £10,000 to various homosexual charities if Beckham pulled out of his World Cup deal before the deadline.

Beckham, who played for England at three World Cups, will reportedly earn £10million as part of his role as an ambassador for the tournament.

However, he has since come under fire for accepting the position due to Qatar's poor human rights record and anti-LGBTQ+ laws.

Lycett went on to add: “If you end your relationship with Qatar, I’ll donate this £10,000 of my own money, as a grand for every million you’re reportedly getting, to charities that support queer people in football.

“However, if you do not, by midday next Sunday [20 November], I will throw this money into a shredder just before the opening ceremony of the World Cup and stream it live on a website I’ve registered called benderslikebeckham.com.”
