Michael Smith finally wins major darts title with dominant Grand Slam triumph

Michael Smith has finally ended his long wait for a major darts title with a dominant victory over Nathan Aspinall in the final of the Grand Slam in Wolverhampton.

After eight defeats in major finals, including to Ross Smith at last month’s European Championship, Bully Boy made it ninth time lucky, cruising to a 16-5 victory. While Smith wasn’t at his best throughout the match, he started well and kept the pressure on an out-of-sorts Aspinall.

Overall, it was a disappointing final following a thrilling tournament. Both players, Aspinall in particular, looked a little drained having come through tough semi-finals earlier in the day.

But Smith won’t care after landing a long overdue major crown at a perfect time with the start of the World Championship less than a month away. Buoyed by this win, he will head to the Alexandra Palace as one of the favourites for glory.

After he nailed the winning double, an emotional Smith collapsed to the floor before being embraced warmly by great mate Aspinall.

"I'm the cat. I've used my ninth life. I don't know what to do," said Smith, who defeated Raymond van Barneveld in the semis earlier in the day.

"Nobody can say I'm a bottle job. They can't take this away from me. The hard work starts again now. I'm going to enjoy this until Thursday and then it's on to the next event on Friday."

Meanwhile, Aspinall, who defeated Luke Humphries earlier in the day, admitted it was a game too far for him, although he was delighted for Smith.

"Two games was too much for me today," he said. "One of them nights. If I'm going to lose to anyone I'm glad it's Michael."

The final stop before the World Championship is next weekend's Players Championships Finals at Butlin's Minehead, starting on Friday.
