#TacoGate: First Lady Jill Biden In Hot Waters Over ‘Racist’ Joke About Latinos

First Lady Jill Biden is facing the wrath of the public after a statement she made at a recent outing was perceived as “offensive” and racist towards the Latino community.

Social media has been torn apart by the FLOTUS’ comment, with some supporting her, while others bashing her for being insensitive.

First Lady Jill Biden Makes Bad Joke

On Monday, the First Lady made a stop at San Antonio, Texas, at the annual conference of UnidosUS as part of the Hispanic “Quest for Equity” theme.

Jill, who served as the second lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017, was trying to praise civil rights activists Raul Yzaguirre when she seemingly misspoke.

She said, “Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength.”

As seen, the known American educator was trying to speak on things that are usually associated with the Latino/Hispanic community. The bodegas are local convenience stores often run by Dominican or Puerto Rican merchants while Taco is a traditional Mexican food consisting of a tortilla topped with a filling.

To make things worse, she wrongly pronounced bodegas, calling it “bogedas.”

The FLOTUS’ attempt at showing off her knowledge of the Latino community didn’t go well with many as she was immediately subjected to backlash.

NAHJ encourages @FLOTUS & her communications team to take time to better understand the complexities of our people & communities.

We are not tacos.

Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by various diasporas, cultures & food traditions.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) released a statement about First Lady Jill’s comment, “Using Breakfast Tacos to try to demonstrate the uniqueness of Latinos in San Antonio demonstrates a lack of cultural knowledge and sensitivity to the diversity of Latinos in the region.”

The NAHJ continued, “NAHJ encouraged Dr. Biden and her speech writing team to take the time in the future to better understand the complexities of our people and communities. We are not Tacos. Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by a variety of diasporas, cultures, and food traditions, and should not be reduced to a stereotype.”

Dr. Biden Apologizes, The Internet Reacts

Following the statement from the NAHJ, Jill issued an apology through her Press Secretary who expressed regret and maintained that the First Lady’s words were meant to convey “pure admiration and love for the Latino community.”

We’re also pretty sure her fans don’t read, let alone read VOGUE. Could she be looking to spice things up? pic.twitter.com/PmfA9E16d1

Despite her apology, the internet couldn’t help but dissect the First Lady’s words and share their thoughts on the saga. Below are some of Twitterverse’s reactions to Jill Biden’s statement.

US Congress candidate Irene Armendariz-Jackson wrote, “Jill Biden came to Texas to tell the Hispanic community that we’re as “unique as breakfast tacos”. The fact that someone actually approved her to say that line in her speech and that NO ONE saw an issue with it is wild. They’re going to be at a 5% Hispanic approval rating soon.”

One fan wrote, “Jill Biden might be the only person more racist than Joe Biden,” while another added, “Not only is Jill Biden a fake doctor, she’s apparently a racist too.”This hilarious comment read, “Looking forward to Jill Biden’s next speech to a black audience where she compares us all to fried chicken.”Others, however, defended the First Lady, noting that the outrage to her statement was exaggerated as it was only a bad joke.

“Someday, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists is going to have to explain just how Jill Biden’s words were an insult. She didn’t call anyone a ‘taco.’ She was addressing the beauty and diversity of the culture,” wrote a concerned fan.An internet user who shared a similar sentiment, added, “Jill Biden made a mistake. No question. Melania helped push the birther myth. That’s infinitely worse.”

Another remark read, “First Lady, Jill Biden apologizes to the Latino community for what she thought was a nice compliment, but what they took to be an insult. Remember when Melania apologized for the coat with the message “I don’t really care do you?” and ” Fuck Christmas”? Me either.”
