Grey's Anatomy Reveals The Only Good Thing That Came From Amelia & Owen

Warning: SPOILERS for Grey’s Anatomy season 18 episode 17 ahead.

Amelia and Owen’s turbulent relationship finally concluded in season 15, but Grey’s Anatomy season 18 revealed the best thing to come out of their breakup. Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) rollercoaster of a relationship started back in season 12 when they quickly celebrated a wedding in Grey’s Anatomy season 12’s finale. While the divorce came right after Amelia’s brain tumor’s diagnosis and removal, and their relationship rekindled when they adopted Leo and Betty at the end of Grey’s Anatomy season 14, it finally ended in Grey’s Anatomy season 15 episode 15.

Although Amelia chose not to be legally Leo’s parent after she and Owen broke up, she would still be in Leo’s life as Betty wanted. After Owen and Teddy (Kim Raver) had Allison and finally confessed their feeling for each other, Amelia’s connection to Leo made it clear they would have had to learn to navigate their relationship as they were all part of the family, and it was impossible for Amelia and Teddy to avoid each other. After the hurt caused by Owen and Amelia’s break-up, though, a friendship that was awkward at first between Teddy and Amelia quickly evolved into something beautiful and judgment-free.

Despite everything that happened in the past between Owen and Amelia, it was Amelia that was the one to offer Teddy the help she needed to fully accept that Leo is being gender creative in Grey’s Anatomy season 18 episode 17. Between Grey’s Anatomy seasons 16 through 18, Amelia and Teddy’s relationship consistently grew into a supportive friendship, no matter what happened in their personal lives and was ultimately a positive outcome from Amelia and Owen’s breakup. Amelia explaining to Teddy how dating Kai, who is non-binary, made her realize how people don’t need to be as neatly defined as Teddy wanted Leo to be is proof of how far their relationship has come.

Although Grey’s Anatomy season 18 episode 17 unmistakably showed how Teddy and Amelia’s friendship was as important as it was supportive, that wasn’t the first instance where Amelia supported Teddy when many people did not. When everyone at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital judged Teddy or openly despised her for cheating on Owen with Tom Koracick in Grey’s Anatomy season 17 episode 5, Amelia was the only person to give Teddy the benefit of the doubt. Despite admitting she had feelings about the whole ordeal, Amelia put Teddy’s feelings first, trying to let Teddy be heard as she knew firsthand that people are complicated and can be hurtful no matter how much one loved another.

Grey’s Anatomy season 18 episode 17 cemented Teddy and Amelia’s relationship as important, as despite how season 18 episode 16 showed Teddy and Owen agreeing on how to deal with Leo being gender non-conforming, Teddy still seemed unsettled by their plan. Only Amelia managed to make her truly understand what the therapist meant by saying they needed to “follow Leo’s lead,” and only Amelia’s supportive words got through to her. This shows how Grey’s Anatomy made Teddy and Amelia’s friendship, albeit incidental, one of the best things that came from Amelia and Owen’s turbulent relationship, making them one of the healthiest relationships in the medical drama.
