Man Utd avoid giving Cristiano Ronaldo massive payout after ripping up his contract

Manchester United have reportedly avoided giving Cristiano Ronaldo a massive pay-out by ripping up his contract.

The Red Devils announced on Tuesday that the 37-year-old has left the club by mutual agreement with immediate effect. It comes in the wake of the Portugal captain’s shocking interview with Piers Morgan last week, where he directed a barrage of verbal attacks at manager Erik ten Hag and the Glazer ownership.

But Ronaldo has not been given a settlement as a result of his agreement with United to walk away for nothing, according to The Telegraph.

The forward still had eight months left on his contract and stood to make a whopping £17million from his deal if he had carried on at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, ESPN reporter Rob Dawson has claimed that Ronaldo’s desire to leave the club equalled United’s willingness to let him go, meaning he was okay to miss out on his huge payout. Dawson also revealed that United were “ready to sue” him if he had not agreed to “mutually” walk away.

Ronaldo is now a free agent after making 54 appearances for the Red Devils since re-joining them in the summer of 2021. And he stated that he still “loves Man Utd” in a statement despite claiming he felt “betrayed” by people at the club and now being axed.

His statement read: "Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early.

"I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future."
