It was reported on Tuesday that the American owners were looking to move on after 17 years of owning the Red Devils.

“As we seek to continue building on the club’s history of success, the board has authorised a thorough evaluation of strategic alternatives,” said executive co-chairmen and directors Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer in a statement.

“We will evaluate all options to ensure that we best serve our fans and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.

“Throughout this process we will remain fully focused on serving the best interests of our fans, shareholders, and various stakeholders.”

Should a sale go through it would mark the end of a 17-year spell dominated by fan protests at the way the family has run the club, before and after, the failed European Super League project.

<p>United haven't won a Premier League title since 2013 and have seen a revolving door of managers ever since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

In more recent times the club have dealt with the explosive interview conducted by Cristiano Ronaldo last week. During the interview he publicly criticised the Glazers’ running of the club and said that they “didn’t care” about United.

Ronaldo’s contract was ultimately terminated on Tuesday after the two parties came to a mutual agreement.

Recent rumours have suggested that any prospective would likely be looking a deal between £5bn and £9bn in order to convince them to sell and in turn, make it the most expensive sale of a sporting club of all time.

The Red Devils won’t be short of interest either, with Sir Jim Radcliffe and Michael Knighton two of many to previously register their  interest in the club.
