Squid Game Season 2 Release Date Timeframe Given By Creator

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has an update on when season 2 may release on Netflix. The South Korean dystopian thriller, which follows a group of players competing in a deadly tournament for cash, was a global sensation in 2021. Squid Game became the most-watched Netflix show in 90 countries within 10 days of its release, and ultimately the streaming service’s most-watched show of all time, earning 1 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days on the platform.

Squid Game’s popularity was enough to garner a season 2, which Netflix announced earlier this year. Not many details about Squid Game season 2 have been disclosed, but Hwang has confirmed that protagonist Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) and game overseer Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) will return in the follow-up installment. Hwang also recently hinted that Squid Game season 2 will introduce more deadly games that will be “even better” than season 1.

As for when viewers can expect to see Squid Game season 2 hit Netflix, Hwang recently told Vanity Fair that the timeframe should be around 2023 or 2024. The plot is still very much in development, and Hwang said that he only has about three pages of ideas so far. Before getting too deep into the details, the director is currently wrapping up final discussions with Netflix regarding Squid Game’s next season.

Despite Squid Game’s creators not having much to share about how the story will continue, the movement on the show is still exciting for fans who ravenously binged through all nine episodes of season 1 last year. However, shows that become surprise smash hits always face the risk of disappointing in their second installment, so Hwang will likely be taking his time to craft the script and build on the ideas introduced in the hugely successful Squid Game season 1. If Hwang can create a storyline that’s even more dramatic and compelling than the previous installment, one or two years will certainly be worth the wait for another round of Squid Game.

Of course, Squid Game has done more than just bring the world another entertaining show to watch. Squid Game has also made a significant cultural impact, putting Korean entertainment under a global spotlight and serving as a gateway for many into the world of K-drama. Thanks to Squid Game and other successful endeavors like the Academy Award-winning Parasite and Apple’s Pachinko, not to mention the wild popularity of K-pop, interest in Korean content is on the rise. That should give Hwang and Netflix all the more reason not to rush development and give Squid Game season 2 the time it deserves.
