Nike co-founder offers update on relationship with Kyrie Irving

Nike co-founder Phil Knight said on Thursday that Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving stepped over the line with his recent actions and that the company’s relationship with him is likely over.

Knight made the comments during an interview with CNBC, which you can see here.

The company recently suspended its relationship with Irving after he shared an antisemetic film on social media and refused to apologize until pressure mounted. He also dodged questions about whether or not he shared antisemetic beliefs in the aftermath.

During his appearance on CNBC, Knight said he doubts the company would ever go back to Irving. He added that when Nike reps sign athletes they not only take into account their ability, but also what type of person they are.

“Kyrie stepped over the line,” said Knight. “It’s kind of that simple. He made some statements that we just can’t abide by, and that’s why we ended the relationship. And, I was fine with that.”

Irving is currently serving a suspension that was handed out by the Nets. They have outlined a series of steps he has to take before he can return to the team, but it remains to be seen if that will happen.

He is a free agent after this season.

Even though his future with the Nets is in obvious doubt, one NBA legend, Julius Erving, recently said he does not believe Irving’s NBA career is finished because somebody is going to be willing to look past all of the controversy and see a player who can still produce.
