Cristiano Ronaldo has scored from the spot for Portugal to become the first man to score at five World Cups.

The former Manchester United forward, 37, won and dispatched a penalty into the top corner during Portugal's opening Group H fixture, to extend his rich scoring record to five consecutive World Cups. Brought down by Ghana centre-back Mohammed Salisu, Ronaldo then stepped up to slam the ball into the back of the net.

First scoring at a World Cup back in 2006, Ronaldo opened his account with another strike from 12 yards, in Portugal's penultimate Group Stage match against Iran.

The strike made Ronaldo the youngest Portuguese player to score in a FIFA World Cup match at 21 years and 132 days. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner also scored in a penalty shootout win against England in the quarter-finals, though that goal is not registered in his total tally of seven.

Inheriting Luis Figo's number seven jersey, and the Portugal captaincy, ahead of the South Africa tournament, Ronaldo notched one in a 7-0 thrashing of North Korea before A Selecao were knocked out in the round of 16 by eventual winners Spain.

Suffering a knee injury prior to the 2014 World Cup, Ronaldo scored just once in Brazil, a late winner for Portugal in a 2-1 win over Ghana, as Portugal failed to make it out of Group G.

Though the Portuguese legend made his mark on the 2018 tournament in incredible style, netting a hat-trick in Portugal's opening fixture to salvage a 3-3 draw against Iberian rivals Spain. Also notching against Morocco, Ronaldo is yet to score for his country outside of the group stage.

Now taking the title of Portugal's oldest goalscorer, Ronaldo's penalty was not without controversy. Salisu's tackle appeared soft at best but, upon review, the Southampton defender failed to take any of the ball and Ronaldo stepped up to hit the headlines once again.

In a lively second-half affair, Ghana hit back through Jordan Ayew's close-range finish before two goals in three minutes handed Portugal a commanding lead. A two-goal advantage soon became one when Osman Bukari scored in the 89th minute.

And while the Africans threw the kitchen sink at Portugal in nine minutes of injury time, Inaki Williams failed to profit from his bit of gamesmanship, slipping when trying to approach Diogo Costa from behind.
