There will be no man in Qatar more relieved than Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

The 2016 European Champions looked to have secured a priceless victory courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record breaking goal, a neat finish from Joao Felix, and a breakaway strike from Chelsea transfer target Rafael Leao. However, Osman Bukari halved the deficit in the 89th minute ensuring a nerve-wracking finish after eight minutes of added time were announced at the end of the contest.

But in the 97th minute, the Porto goalkeeper had the game and the victory all wrapped up when he gratefully caught the ball…or so the football world thought.

With seconds on the clock remaining, Costa rolled the ball onto the ground so he could distribute the ball with his feet instead. However, he did not realise Ghanaian forward Inaki Williams was lurking behind him.

The Athletic Bilbao’s forward’s cunning plan worked perfectly, as he got to the ball before Costa had even realised the jeopardy he had just put himself, his teammates, and his country in. Williams got to the ball and with a floundering Costa to beat, another famous result looked to be on the cards.

Unfortunately, the 28-year-old forward slipped just as he was about to secure a dramatic point for Ghana. It was a cruel moment of misfortune that could come back to haunt the 2010 quarter-finalists.

And the football world all shared in Ghana’s agony, saying they were all robbed off one of the best moments in the competition’s history. “We were robbed of the best moment in World Cup history by a slip there,” one fan commented on social media.

“Inaki almost gave Ronaldo a heartattack. The black stars did well,” another posted on Twitter. “This has me on the floor man. Would’ve been crazy if he scored,” another added, while one other fan said, “I nearly threw up.”

Fortunately for Portugal, they were able to secure the victory and take a huge step towards the knockout stages. Uruguay’s 0-0 draw against South Korea means they are firmly in control of Group H.
