Don't get me wrong the World Cup's fantastic, but watching the greatest sports event on Earth comes with a few downsides.

Like being forced to listen to Martin Keown, who's about as entertaining as a bowl of cold porridge, on commentary every now and then.

The former Arsenal man has spent the last decade making overtly basic statements on the Match of the Day sofa with the wide-eyed enthusiasm of someone explaining the alphabet to a toddler … and he was at it again during Brazil's 2-0 win over Serbia on Thursday.

Richarlison gave Selecao the lead on 62 minutes with a simple close-range stab, but his second caught everyone's attention, and will go down in history as one of the best goals scored by a Brazilian at the tournament – and that's saying something!

The Tottenham man cushioned Vinicius Jr's pacey cross with his left before instantly swivelling and firing a scissored-volley past the Serbian keeper with his right to send the 88,000 fans inside the Lusail Iconic Stadium absolutely wild.

It was quickly dubbed a goal of the tournament contender by fans on social media, but that didn't stop Keown from feeling like he had to state the bleeding obvious, telling viewers: "That’s not an easy finish, by the way."

Is Martin Keown the worst co-commentator at the World Cup? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Exasperated supporters hit out at the excruciating water-is-wetism, with one tweeting: "‘That’s not an easy finish, by the way’ says Martin Keown about a spinning 180-degree scissor volley that every single human on earth was amazed by."

Another joked: "Glad he pointed that out. I thought it was a tap-in at first," while a third commented: "Wonderful insight, Martin. That's why you get paid the big bucks."

Thankfully, for every Keown we have an Ally McCoist or an Andros Townsend – who fans labelled a breath of fresh air on co-commentary earlier in the week – otherwise mute buttons across the country would be pretty worn out by now.
