Vader vs. Obi-Wan Rematch Reason Will Surprise Die-Hard Star Wars Fans

The reason for the Obi-Wan Darth Vader rematch in Obi-Wan Kenobi will surprise Star Wars fans. Lucasfilm is making its return to Disney+ after The Book of Boba Fett with another classic character in Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor reprises his beloved Star Wars role alongside Hayden Christensen, who revisits Darth Vader, this time on the small screen.

Lucasfilm is all out in terms of marketing Obi-Wan Kenobi, which is directed by Deborah Chow with a story written by Joby Harold. Throughout its promotional period, new details about what to expect from the show have emerged, including the arrival of Moses Ingram’s Reva/the Third Sister, who functions as the story’s primary antagonist. Both Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse are also returning as Owen and Beru Lars, respectively, while a young Luke Skywalker is confirmed to also appear. Amidst all of this, however, arguably the most exciting part of Obi-Wan Kenobi is the rematch between former allies, Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker, who is now known as Darth Vader. While their falling out was tackled in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and effectively set up their next battle, the reason for their upcoming face-off maybe something totally unexpected.

As part of Vanity Fair‘s extensive Star Wars feature, Chow opens up about Obi-Wan and Darth Vader’s rematch in Obi-Wan Kenobi. While the director is careful not to reveal any spoilers, the interview hints that the reason for the pair’s match-up “may surprise even the most ardent Star Wars fans.” Read Chow’s quote below:

For me, across the prequels, through the original trilogy, there’s a love-story dynamic with these two that goes through the whole thing. I felt like it was quite hard to not [include] the person who left Kenobi in such anguish in the series. […] I don’t think he ever will not care about him. What’s special about that relationship is that they loved each other.

Lucasfilm is exploring a time in Star Wars history that has been barely explored. Not much is known about what Obi-Wan or Darth Vader are doing during this point, although both McGregor and Christensen have teased what viewers can expect from their characters in the Disney+ series. For McGregor, Obi-Wan will be at his lowest and darkest point, while his co-star said Darth Vader isn’t exactly in his prime yet, he’s more used to his Sith Lord role. As exciting as seeing the Darth Vader Obi-Wan rematch will be, however, the original Star Wars film already spoiled who will be the winner of this upcoming fight. In the 1977 flick, Darth Vader referenced their last fight, suggesting that his old Jedi Master bested him.

As for the reason for their rematch? Logistically speaking, Vader and the Empire are already hunting down Obi-Wan and all other surviving Jedi in the show. While Reva functions as Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s primary villain, it’s only a matter of time before she leads Darth Vader to his former master. Aside from that, however, Chow’s quote hints that the pair’s fight will still be connected to their falling out, with Vader possibly still convinced that his Kenobi is to blame for the death of Padmé. Obi-Wan, on the other hand, still feels responsible for not doing a good enough job training Anakin, blaming himself for his fall to the dark side.
