England fans were ‘mocked for tattoos’ as they were strip searched at World Cup

Two England fans were strip-searched and ā€˜mockedā€™ for their tattoos by security guards at the Qatar World Cup.

The pair of Three Lions supporters turned up to watch Englandā€™s tournament opener against Iran at the Khalifa International Stadium dressed in crusader costumes. They were turned away five times at security checkpoints for wearing the ā€œoffensiveā€ Ā£3,000 outfits – which were hand-made in India.

It meant they missed the entire first-half of the 6-2 drubbing. And after having their costumes confiscated and attempting to gain entry in t-shirts and shorts, they were ushered to a side room and subjected to a ā€œhumiliatingā€ strip search.

One – a 57-year-old engineer – said: "As we tried to get in we were taken into a small side room by three staff and told to strip naked. I have quite a few tattoos and they spent a lot of time studying them and mocking me.

"We weren't given intimate searches. They just wanted to demean us and teach us a lesson. I couldn't believe what was happening and when I got down to my underpants I asked: 'Do you really want to see my penis?' One of them replied: 'Yes. Take them off.'

"There was no reason for it. They didn't even search us. It was just ritual humiliation – absolutely appalling treatment.ā€

The pair of expats in fact helped in the building of World Cup venues over the past 10 years. They believed it ā€œwould be a laughā€ to dress up for the match in chainmail, helmets and rubber swords as a nod to crusader knight St George – Englandā€™s patron saint.

FIFA officials had previously urged fans against donning the fancy dress during the tournament in Qatar, despite it being a fairly common occurrence among England supporters at other international tournaments.

One guard even asked whether the pair were "here to kill Muslims". Given the crusades saw decades of bloody battles, anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out had already issued a warning over controversial fancy dress in the build-up to the tournament.
