England supporters blame ITV ‘curse’ after World Cup snoozefest with USA

Phil Foden being left on the bench, Marcus Rashford not being introduced until the 78th minute, Gareth Southgate being too negative, it has all been deliberated.

Many are trying to explain England’s disappointing 0-0 draw against the USA in the World Cup. Uncle Sam has always been a pesky World Cup opponent for the Three Lions, and Gregg Berhalter’s side almost caused another huge shock in Qatar.

England are yet to overcome the plucky Americans who came desperately close to taking the lead in the first half. However, while there were some glaring issues in England’s performance, Three Lions’ fans believe they have finally realised what the problem is – the chosen broadcaster.

ITV were on broadcast duty last night for the frustrating draw in the Al Bayt Stadium. Not that this should be surprising, as ITV have seemingly become a bogey broadcaster for the Three Lions.

In fact, when it comes to major tournaments, England have only won two out of 13 matches since 1998, when ITV were the ones broadcasting. There have also been five defeats and six draws over the course of those matches.

This record is the complete opposite of broadcast rivals the BBC, who have a significantly better record. Eleven of the 15 matches in major tournaments the BBC have broadcast have ended in victory, while there also have been two draws and one defeat. And while team selections, tactics, and substitutions will not be given a free pass, the England faithful believe the culprit is clear.

“Oh my God, I thought this was a thing subconsciously. I can’t believe the stats bare out,” a worried England fan realised shortly after the game. One other fan took their frustrations a step further by tagging Ofcom into a tweet and demanding, “this has to stop!”, while somebody else also clearly said, “Not making this up. England games on ITV are a bad thing.”

Another Three Lions’ supporter also believes the issue is more complicated, blaming the absence of former England commentator Clive Tyldesley, posting, “We would’ve won if Clive Tyldesley was on commentary.”

However, others have been an awful lot more blunt about their feelings towards ITV, clearly stating, “ITV is unpatriotic, official!”
