Insider hints Buccaneers could bring Tom Brady back for 2023 season

Add NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero to the list of people who feel Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady could play at least one more season.

As noted by the Joe Bucs Fan website, Pelissero said while serving as a substitute host on “The Rich Eisen Show” that the future Hall of Famer “looked like Tom Brady” guiding the Buccaneers down the field for a game-winning drive against the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday.

“And the guy at the podium, it looked like the weight of the world had come off his shoulders,” Pelissero added about Brady’s not-safe-for-work postgame comments. “If that’s [the real Brady] and [the Bucs] figure out a way to make a run here, I put nothing past the guy in terms of what he might do in 2023.”

NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated raised eyebrows last week when he suggested Brady could look to end his career with the San Francisco 49ers, the club the 45-year-old supported while growing up in California. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell then said on Thursday that he believes Brady “doesn’t want his final image as an NFL quarterback to be at the helm of an eight- or nine-win Buccaneers team.”

Both Barnwell and Pelissero explained Brady isn’t what’s ailing the 4-5 Buccaneers heading into Sunday’s showdown with the 6-3 Seattle Seahawks in Munich, Germany. Joe Bucs Fan and TMZ Sports also pointed out that Gisele Bündchen, Brady’s ex-wife, recently purchased a home in the Miami Beach area. Bündchen staying in Florida presumably would allow the seven-time Super Bowl champion to spend another campaign as Tampa Bay’s QB1 while remaining close to his children.

Some think Brady is “not very good anymore,” but ESPN stats show he’s 13th among eligible players with a 90.5 passer rating, 16th with a 51.5 total QBR and second with 2,547 passing yards this season. The fact he has only 10 touchdown throws across nine games has plenty to do with receivers dropping catchable passes and with what Barnwell referred to as “miscommunication in the passing game.”

Brady may no longer be a Most Valuable Player candidate, but Pelissero mentioned the GOAT probably would be a better option for any team next September than names such as Sam Ehlinger and P.J. Walker. For what it’s worth, the current version of Brady is unquestionably the best signal-caller on a Tampa Bay roster that also features Blaine Gabbert and Kyle Trask.
