The Houston Astros are still celebrating their second World Series title, but now they need to replace the guy that helped build the roster.

The Astros announced on Friday afternoon that they have parted ways with general manager James Click after he turned down a one-year contract offer from the team.

“We are grateful for all of James’ contributions. We have had great success in each of his three seasons and James has been an important part of that success. I want to personally thank him and wish him and his family well moving forward.” – Jim Crane pic.twitter.com/ShaiN4Uah8

The relationship between team owner Jim Crane and Click has reportedly been rocky, and there was even a report before the playoffs that he could be fired if the Astros lost in the postseason.

Instead, they went on a dominant run through the postseason and won the World Series.

That obviously compelled Crane to offer Click a contract extension, but it was only a one-year deal and Click did not like the idea of working on a year-to-year basis with the team. Given everything that he has accomplished in Houston, helping to build a team that appeared in back-to-back World Series and is coming off of a win just a week ago, it is very understandable.

When announcing the one-year extension for manager Dusty Baker on Wednesday, Crane said he is never satisfied and is always pushing to get better.

This is a largely unprecedented move as it is the first time in 75 years that a head of baseball operations did not return to their team following a World Championship (via ESPN’s Jeff Passan).

Click was hired by the Astros in 2020 after the team fired former general manager Jeff Luhnow. Luhnow and former manager A.J. Hinch were fired following the fallout of the team’s sign-stealing scandal.
