Sylvester Stallone films that were snubbed at The Oscars

After his breakout performance in 1976 with Rocky, Sylvester Stallone quickly became a superstar. He came out of nowhere, lit up our screens and changed boxing movies forever. His performance was so dazzling that it earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars, alongside greats Robert De Niro and Peter Finch.

Stallone was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Rocky went on to win Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing. In addition, Stallone was nominated once again for his portrayal of the beloved Rocky in Ryan Coogler’s Creed in 2016.

Now, being a three-time Oscar nominee is nothing to turn your nose at but Stallone has delivered some fantastic performances over his career that were well and truly snubbed by the Academy. Here’s 3 times Sylvester Stallone was snubbed at The Oscars.

Cop Land (1997)
James Mangold’s urban western, Cop Land, is a truly underrated masterpiece. Stallone delivered such an understated yet nuanced performance as Freddy Heflin, a small-town sheriff who tangles with corrupt cops.

By the late 90s, Stallone had lost his credibility as a serious actor and his larger than life action hero persona had inflated to the max! Cop Land was Stallone’s attempt to combat this and show that he still had some dramatic chops.

He wanted the role so bad he even took a mere salary of $60000, ditched his shredded body and gained 40 lbs.

All of this, however, went unnoticed at the Academy and not only was Sly snubbed for a Best Actor nomination, the whole movie was snubbed also. Let’s just take comfort that this cult classic still gains traction to this day and goes down as a hidden gem!

First Blood (1982)
While the majority of the movie is Stallone kicking ass, trenching through the woods and showing off his impressive survival skills, by the end of the picture the drama picks up massively. Stallone delivers a gut-wrenching monologue about life in the Vietnam war and the turmoil upon coming home. Stallone wrote this monologue himself and based it on hours of interviews with real life veterans.

It truly is a magnificent, well layered performance that deserved another Nomination for Sly.

Rocky Balboa (2006)
It’s safe to say that Stallone feels most at home playing this character. While he has always delivered knock-out performances (pun intended) right the way through the franchise, his portrayal of a grieving Rocky was a return to form and his best dramatic performance since the original 1976 picture. And once again, Sly delivered on a superb monologue that will go down in the history books! Just give this man an Oscar already!
