Kylian Mbappe breaks two French legends’ records with amazing brace vs Denmark

Kylian Mbappe broke the records of two French legends with his amazing brace against Denmark.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward scored either side of an equaliser from Andreas Christensen to secure a 2-1 victory for the reigning World Cup champions and book their place as the first side through to the round of 16. His latest two international goals have seen him climb to joint-seventh in the list of all-time highest France scorers, drawing level with Zinedine Zidane.

He had equalled the records of Just Fontaine and Jean-Pierre Papin with his first goal on the night, the 30th of his international career.

By scoring again in the final five minutes, he has now taken his tally to 31 goals in 61 caps at just 23-years-old. Despite moving ahead of Fontaine, he has yet to win a World Cup golden boot, unlike the legendary striker.

Fontaine finished as the top scorer at the 1958 tournament in Sweden by scoring 13 goals in six matches as France finished in third place.

Mbappe is also now just 20 goals off the the current record for most France goals, which is set at 51 and held by Olivier Giroud and Thierry Henry.

Giroud equalled Henry's record last Tuesday by scoring twice either side of half-time in France's opening victory against Australia.

Away from France, Mbappe now has seven World Cup goals across the last two tournaments, the same as Lionel Messi in the competition and one more than Henry.

That record is boosted by the four goals he scored four years ago in Russia on the way to winning the tournament, the second time France have done so.

Mbappe was also named the young player of the tournament and voted into FIFA's fan dream team by World Cup supporters.

The former Monaco man also leads the scoring charts at this World Cup less than a week into the tournament, with both he and Ecuador's Enner Valencia having scored three times in their first two matches.

It is unclear whether Mbappe will appear in the final group match against Tunisia on Wednesday, with France already confirmed as the first nation through to the knockout stages.
