BBC’s Kelly Somers reveals she was ‘brutally trolled’ over Raheem Sterling interview

BBC presenter and commentator Kelly Somers was “brutally trolled” after she interviewed England ace Raheem Sterling.

Somers is a regular sight for football lovers as one of the main presenters and commentators of all Three Lions coverage. She has also played a huge role in the BBC’s coverage of the 2022 World Cup and the European Championship last year.

However, this incredible position has unfortunately left her exposed to social media trolls and nastiness, as she found out the hard way last season after an awkward interview with Sterling.

Somers was entrusted with questioning the Chelsea ace after England’s 1-0 victory over Croatia last season. Sterling nabbed the winning goal to secure the three points over the side who beat the Three Lions in the 2018 World Cup Final.

It was an emotional and inspiring interview from the 27-year-old, who reflected on his time being ‘the boy from Brent’. Unfortunately, technical issues resulted in Somers missing Sterling’s poignant quote.

Instead, she quickly moved onto her next question where she asked the four-time Premier League winner if he felt he had justified his selection with Gareth Southgate’s side. Unfortunately, this soon resulted in Sommers getting abused on all of her social media channels.

“I could tell it was hard for us to understand each other and I wasn’t comfortable with how the interview had gone,” she said in an interview with the Telegraph. “Later, after conducting six more interviews and on a high, I picked up my phone and … I can’t quite describe it, there were thousands of messages.

“Your heart drops. That was the first time where I realised, ”wow this is next level, this is part of the job’. It can be really brutal’.

Somers also added the abuse was coming from "grown men" who went out of their way to abuse her online. Hopefully, Somers does not have to experience any more comments like these.
