Writer/director James Gunn reveals who was behind the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's Rick and Morty set prank of hiding show figures.

Writer/director James Gunn reveals who was behind the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Rick and Morty set prank of hiding show figures. The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe threequel potentially marks Gunn’s final outing in the franchise after initially being let go from the film over the resurfacing of controversial tweets by conservative news outlets. Following Gunn’s hiring by Warner Bros. for the DC Extended Universe’s The Suicide Squad and subsequently Peacemaker, Disney would reverse their decision and bring him back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Plot details for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are currently unknown, though the film will see the returns of its main cast Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and Sylvester Stallone. The film will also marks the MCU debuts of Will Poulter as Adam Warlock and Peacemaker‘s Chukwudi Iwuji in an undisclosed role described as a powerful and important character. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 began filming in November 2021 and with wrap right around the corner, Gunn is sharing one tease from the set.

As production nears its end, James Gunn took to Twitter to reveal who was behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Rick and Morty set prank as being a group of BTS crew including Senior VFX Wrangler Ron Underdahl, Video Assistant “Porkchop” and VFX Supervisor Stephane Ceretti. Gunn praised the group for making every morning “a bit more fun” and revealing they are going to put all of the figures up for charity with a certificate of authentication signed by the writer/director. Gunn’s tease of the various Rick and Morty figures appearing at random on the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set sparked many questions as to the possibility of it hinting towards a cameo from one of the show’s stars or an Easter egg for the hit Adult Swim series being snuck into the MCU film. Gunn himself even recently hinted that the figures could tie to a secret cast member in the film, stating that an actor who “people don’t know is in the movie” snuck one of the figures in front of him while his back was turned. Given Rick and Morty co-creator/star Justin Roiland has lent his voice to a number of projects he hasn’t been at the helm of, including Warner Bros’ Space Jam: A New Legacy, many took to theorizing he could appear at some point in the film.

Though some may be disappointed that the reveal of who’s behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Rick and Morty prank seemingly doesn’t confirm Roiland or co-creator/star Dan Harmon’s appearance in the film, it shouldn’t entirely kill the hopes of who could appear in the film. Gunn has teased that the MCU threequel will include some “wonderful” cameos that are sure to excite “true Guardians fans” and paired with the long-awaited arrival of Poulter’s Adam Warlock, the writer/director seems to have plenty of fun surprises in store for audiences. Only time will tell what cameos can be expected from the film when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.
