Argentina assistant manager Pablo Aimar reduced to tears by Lionel Messi’s goal vs Mexico

Argentina assistant manager Pablo Aimar was reduced to tears after Lionel Messi fired the Copa America winners into the lead.

The South American giants came into the contest under huge pressure having lost to Saudi Arabia in their opening match. Defeat to Mexico would have seen La Albiceleste crash out of the World Cup in what is likely to be Messi’s last ever World Cup.

However, the Argentina skipper was never going to allow that to happen as he sent a wonderful effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards out to once again rescue his country from humiliation. And things all got a bit too much for Aimar, who was in floods of tears when the ball hit the back of the net.

Aimar had to be consoled by two coaches as his colleagues and players celebrated in jubilant fashion. Fortunately for the ex-Benfica forward, he was not the only Argentine in the Lusail Stadium crying.

Many began weeping when Messi received a pass from the right side, controlled it beautifully, and sent a low, powerful effort into the bottom corner to break the deadlock. It was a moment of magic his country desperately needed.

He then fed a short pass to Enzo Fernandez, who swivelled onto his favoured right side and sent a curling effort into the top corner. But while there were very emotional and jubilant scenes, Messi insisted there is still a lot more work to be done, as they have to face current table toppers Poland on November 30.

"It was uncomfortable given the defeat in the opening match, which we didn't expect," Messi said, after the game. "The days were very long, that's how it felt.

“We were eager to have the chance to turn this around. We knew it was a critical game. If we didn't win we were out and if we won, we would have another chance.

“Luckily we could win and that was a weight off our shoulders and joy. We have peace of mind, it's all down to us again."
