Over the last 20 years, the United States has worked agonisingly hard to present itself as a serious football nation.

However, Fox Soccer may well have just sent their building work back a few years after they were fooled by a Neymar lookalike. The Paris Saint-Germain superstar has been ruled out of Brazil’s World Cup group stage matches against Switzerland and Cameroon after injuring his ankle in their 2-0 victory over Serbia.

He, understandably, may not be in the best of moods in Qatar right now. However, that is still no excuse for the American broadcaster to mistake a brooding Neymark lookalike for the ex-Barcelona star himself.

Their reporters could not believe their luck when they thought they saw the 34-year-old trudging through the streets of Doha. Accompanied by his own entourage, his doppelganger could be seen edging his way through the crowds, while a bulked up security guard pushed people out of their way.

Immediately, the Fox News reporter and cameraman made a beeline towards the Brazilian, thinking they have shot something exclusive. “Neymar was spotted walking around Doha,” they posted, excitedly, on social media.

Unfortunately for Fox, the penny dropped around 22 minutes later when they, one way or another, came to the realisation they were duped. “Update: we got got,” they posted in a follow up tweet.

“Neymar has a very convincing doppelganger,” they added. They will certainly be hoping they have not been fooled by the USA’s positive performance against the England.

Victory for the US against Iran in their final group game will see them progress into the Round of 16. Their impressive display against the Three Lions was a major statement of how dangerous they could be.

In fact, it would not be outrageous to say they were unlucky not to come away with three points, as Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic both had good chances to open the scoring. Either way, they will need to be more ruthless in front of goal if they are to overcome a buoyant Iran side, who have their tails up after dispatching Wales 2-0.
