Andor TV Series Creator Discusses The Fate Of Two Major Characters
Disney’s newest live-action Star Wars TV series, Andor, recently wrapped up its first season. The show is returning for a second season at some point in the future–potentially in 2024–and while fans wait, series creator Tony Gilroy has answered some burning questions about the events of Season 1.
This story contains major spoilers for Andor.
Starting off, Gilroy addressed what might have happened to Andy Serkis’ fan-favorite character, Kino Loy, following the events of the prison break. After breaking free from the prison, Loy and all the other prisoners had to leap into the water and swim to shore for any chance of survival. The only problem? Loy admits in a tender moment, “I can’t swim.” That’s the last we see of Loy, leaving fans to wonder what happened to him.
Gilroy gave a coy explanation to Entertainment Weekly. He said, “He doesn’t die. I don’t know. We don’t see him die.”
Anything can happen in the wacky and wild world of Star Wars, so it wouldn’t be unreasonable for Loy to have somehow survived. Fans will have to wait until Season 2 to find out, it seems.
Gilroy also addressed the theory that Marva (Fiona Shaw) didn’t actually die and that her funeral scene was really just a show to help her escape. This is a fun theory, Gilroy said, but it’s not true.
“I saw that theory. I love that theory. I saw somebody with a theory, ‘Oh my God, she’s not dead. They’re sneaking her out of there. It’s Cassian’s way of getting her free and they think she’s dead.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, that’s a viable idea,’ but that’s not what we’re doing,” he said.
Finally, Gilroy addressed where Cassian is heading in Season 2. Gilroy said Season 2 will “juggle four years” worth of storytelling as the plot advances to the planet Yavin.
“How do you collaborate when paranoia and secrecy are your product? How do you scale up? How do you join forces? And how does the empire exploit those differences? What are the effects of time on these people? And then obviously within that, we’re gonna try to tell a really, a ripping yarn, a really good adventure story,” Gilroy said. “And we’re gonna try to have all the relationships and all the love and all the betrayal and all the other stuff.”
Filming is underway on Andor Season 2, but the show isn’t expected to come to Disney+ until 2024. While Star Wars fans have to wait some time for the next season of Andor,The Mandalorian Season 3 is set to debut in February.
