Cristiano Ronaldo stripped of World Cup goal as FIFA award strike to Bruno Fernandes

Cristiano Ronaldo has been stripped of his World Cup goal by FIFA.

Ronaldo thought he'd opened the scoring against Uruguay when he leapt into the air to nod home a Bruno Fernandes cross in the 54th minute of Monday night's clash.

The former Manchester United star timed his run to perfection and instantly celebrated the goal with teammates. But the ball did not appear to change trajectory from the moment he met Fernandes' cross in the air.

Instant replays showed the ball having barely made contact with his head. Only a few strands of the icon's hair appeared to be grazed as the ball flew past Sergio Rochet and into the net.

And after several checks, the 37-year-old's goal was chalked off and awarded to ex-Red Devils teammate Fernandes, with whom he celebrated both after the goal and following the final whistle.

Ronaldo thought he had equalled Eusebio's record for the most goals scored (9) at the FIFA World Cup finals by a Portuguese player, having grabbed his eighth against Ghana via a penalty.

But the leading all-time international top-scorer will now have to turn his attention to the game against South Korea on Friday if he is to equal that record.

Ronaldo even appeared to protest the decision to strip him of his goal after the game, as he indicated to someone off camera that he felt the touch of the ball.

Yet he will still have more chances to score a 820th career goal, as Fernandes' penalty cemented a 2-0 win and guaranteed qualification to the knockout stages of the World Cup.
