England beat Wales at World Cup to win group – and send their local rivals home

The World Cup Battle of Britain saw England's Three Lions slay the Welsh dragons as Marcus Rashford proved to he had the golden touch to match his gleaming boots.

He looked like he had put them on the wrong feet for the first 45 minutes. But by the end, he was shining in them as he fired England into a last-16 tie with Senegal as Group B winners.

The England forward had waited 16 months for his chance to start in a Three Lions shirt again. He looked like he had frozen in the city by the desert in the opening half against Wales here.

But it was the Manchester United striker’s fine free-kick after the break which ignited England into life after a drab first-half on the back of a dour draw with USA.

Rashford was one of four changes from that game along with Phil Foden and it was the City man who got the second.

The third was a great bit of pace and creativity from Rashford to squeeze the ball under Wales keeper Danny Ward, even if the Leicester shot stopper was poor.

How far can England go now? Let us know in the comments section.

It was the standard of performance to match the golden footwear, that's for sure. That’s his third of the tournament to take him level with Kylian Mbappe, Cody Gakpo and Enner Valencia.

Those boots might win him the trophy version of the same colour if he keeps this up. He certainly made his point to Gareth Southgate here.

It will be hard to drop him for their first ever meeting with Senegal on Sunday. But at the break, the England boss must have considered hauling him off. He wouldn’t have been the only one.

His plan to bring in Rashford and Foden while packing the midfield with Jordan Henderson, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice wasn’t working against a deep-lying Welsh side.

It took about two minutes to realise what approach Rob Page’s side were taking. If they sat much deeper they would have found themselves outside the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.

England had an early chance when Harry Kane dropped deep to make the most of some sloppy Wales play but Rashford fluffed the opportunity. His moment would come later.

Kieffer Moore and Gareth Bale may as well have not come out for the first half for Wales. They barely touched the ball. Bale was off at the break which suggested he must have been carrying an injury.

England’s only other chance of the half fell to Foden. He was put in by Jude Bellingham with a lovely pass on the turn but the Manchester City man found the stands.

Southgate’s side were passive, there were few brave passes which could have broken through the red wall in front of them.

The second half couldn’t have been more different. It was sparked by Rashford’s free-kick which arrowed into the top corner in the 50th minute after Foden was fouled.

Rashford played a pivotal role in the second which came just a minute later. He was alert to nick the ball from Ben Davies. Harry Kane then whipped across a stunning ball for Foden to tap in his first goal in a World Cup.

What looked set to turn into a tricky night for the England boss, turned into a rather routine one as he was able to bring on fresh legs and rest tired ones.

Rashford rounded it off with his third in the 68th minute to grab the Three Lions' 100th goal in the World Cup. Those golden boots will surely be shined up for another appearance on Sunday.
