New Daredevil Show Officially Happening At Disney+

With the character now properly part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney+ is moving forward with a new Daredevil series, though it’s unclear whether Charlie Cox is returning. Cox first brought the character of blind lawyer Matt Murdock and vigilante Daredevil to life with the eponymous Netflix show developed by Drew Goddard. The Daredevil show would help launch a group of shows informally known as the Marvel Knights series that also included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and The Defenders, all of which held loose ties to the greater MCU.

Running for three seasons on Netflix, Daredevil received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, namely for Cox’s performance in the titular role as well as Vincent D’Onofrio’s performance as the villainous Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher and the character development seen throughout. With Netflix and Marvel Studios’ deal ending in 2018, all of the MCU shows would find themselves canceled, leaving their futures largely unknown. Cox and D’Onofrio would finally make their way to the major MCU with the likes of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye and now one of their futures is looking very bright.

Variety has brought word that Disney+ has officially entered development on a new Daredevil show with Covert Affairs duo Matt Corman and Chris Ord set to write and executive produce. What is unclear from the ordered series is whether Charlie Cox will be reprising his role from the Netflix series and Spider-Man: No Way Home, with his return yet to be confirmed. Marvel has yet to officially announce the Daredevil show’s development or Cox’s future in the MCU.

News of a new Daredevil series coming to Disney+ comes a few months after rumors began swirling of a full MCU reboot being in the works and production listings pointing towards filming getting underway on the show later this year under a new production banner formed by Disney entitled Blind Faith Productions LLC. Given the project is still in its earliest stages of development, it’s understandable Marvel hasn’t yet commented on the new Daredevil show, namely whether Charlie Cox will reprise his role as the Man Without Fear. That being said, it seems difficult to believe that Marvel Studios would elect to move forward on the show without the fan-favorite actor leading the charge, namely after his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Cox himself has teased future plans being in the works for his Daredevil and sharing his own ideas on what should come next for the character, including a soft reboot offering less violent material while also expressing his hopes to adapt Frank Miller’s “Born Again” comic storyline. Reports of a new Daredevil show also come on the heels of costume designer Stacy Caballero seemingly revealing that both Cox and D’Onofrio are returning for Disney+’s Echo, which recently entered production. While audiences await word on further details for the new Daredevil show, they can revisit Cox’s first three seasons streaming on Disney+ now.
