If Black Bolt had been given the chance to fight the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange 2, the Illuminati battle would have gone much differently.

Would Black Bolt's Voice Really Kill Scarlet Witch? How Powerful Is He?

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

While the Scarlet Witch is incredibly powerful in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, could she have survived the voice of the Inhumans’ Black Bolt? A member of the Illuminati, Blackagar Boltagon was featured in an extended cameo role in the new MCU film along with his quasi-sonic vocal cords. One of the most powerful beings in Marvel Comics; it’s interesting to wonder how his abilities would have fared against Wanda Maximoff had he been given the chance.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) was determined to reunite with her children in another universe, regardless of the multiversal repercussions. Needing the powers of America Chavez, the new hero was being protected from Wanda by Doctor Strange and his fellow Masters of the Mystic Arts. Escaping to the universe of Earth-838, America and Strange soon found themselves in the custody of the Illuminati. Among the exciting members, which included Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role as the X-Men’s Charles Xavier and John Krasinki debuting as Mr. Fantastic, Anson Mount reprised his role as Black Bolt, King of the Inhumans, whose first debut was in the brief 2017 television series which had aired on ABC.

While the Inhumans series wasn’t the MCU’s most successful project, the live-action version of Black Bolt was still impressive, possessing the same destructive vocal cords as his comics counterpart. While a flashback in Doctor Strange 2 saw Black Bolt killing the Doctor Strange of Earth-838 with nothing but two softly spoken words, he was unable to use his powers against the rogue Scarlet Witch before she used her chaos magic to remove his mouth (which ultimately killed him). That being said, would Wanda have been affected by the power of the Inhuman king had he been able to speak?

Black Bolt’s Powers In Marvel Comics & The MCU Explained

Uniquely exposed to the Terrigen Mists in utero, Black Bolt is far stronger than most Inhumans in the comics. Due to his quasi-sonic vocal cords, Black Bolt was kept isolated in a sound-proof chamber from the moment of his birth until he was able to control his powers at the age of 19. Inheriting the throne that was his birthright, the power of Black Bolt is unquestionable. While a whisper has the power to destroy entire structures and warships, one of his screams once tore a hole in reality itself. The same is largely true in the MCU. At an early age, the surprise manifestation of his abilities resulted in the future ruler accidentally killing his parents by simply asking a question. As such, Black Bolt’s true skill is his restraint and frequent silence, as even an escaped breath can cause damage, an example being when he totaled a squad car after a police officer struck him (as seen in Inhumans).

Would Black Bolt’s Voice Easily Kill Scarlet Witch?

In Doctor Strange 2, Black Bolt’s mouth was removed by Scarlet Witch. Panicked, Black Bolt tied to speak, causing his brain to implode from the power of his own voice, which was still destructive as ever. However, Black Bolt would likely have annihilated Wanda with a single word. It’s evident that the Darkhold-corrupted Scarlet Witch is incredibly powerful as a prophesied wielder of chaos magic. That being said, the power of Black Bolt in the comics and the MCU proved that she either would have been ripped to shreds like the Doctor Strange of Earth-838 or, at the very least, would have been majorly incapacitated (assuming she’d attempt to shield herself with her magic). Unfortunately, Black Bolt’s fate was sealed when Mr. Fantastic told Wanda about the Inhuman ruler’s voice, a move that, in retrospect, was really ill-advised from the so-called Smartest Man Alive.

Is Black Bolt The Most Powerful Illuminati Member?

Whether it’s the version seen in the comics or the MCU’s new Illuminati of Earth-838, the team is comprised of the superhero community’s leaders who help guide and keep their world safe (often in secret). As such, the power levels present are naturally quite high. That being said, Black Bolt’s massive power as an Inhuman ranks him near the top when compared to his fellow members. While the X-Men’s Professor X is one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet and Mr. Fantastic is a genius along with his impressive elasticity, it’s hard to beat the level of destruction Black Bolt can produce with a single whisper. While it was only meant to be a brief role, it makes sense that Scarlet Witch had to kill Black Bolt first in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Otherwise, the odds are strong that she would have quickly lost against the King of the Inhumans.
