Daniel Craig's Mr. Fantastic Cameo Would've Been Better Than Krasinski

Warning: Spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!

John Krasinki’s cameo as Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was a major talking point, but Daniel Craig’s portrayal as the Fantastic Four member would’ve been better. Krasinski’s MCU debut came during a pivotal scene within the Doctor Strange sequel, depicting Stephen Strange’s encounter with Earth-838’s Illuminati team. Aside from Mr. Fantastic, the team included Captain Carter, Black Bolt, Captain Marvel, and Professor X.

Though Patrick Stewart’s return as Charles Xavier was confirmed during the promotional stage leading up to Doctor Strange 2, versions of the other MCU characters were kept under wraps. Krasinski’s introduction as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic was particularly buzzworthy. Not only was it the first time the MCU incorporated a member of “Marvel’s First Family,” but it was the first official tie-in to the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. Unfortunately, Mr. Fantastic and the rest of the Illuminati council team members were brutally killed by Scarlet Witch after her multiverse hunt of America Chavez.

John Krasinki’s Reed Richards certainly worked well enough for the brief time he was shown as one of the founders of the Fantastic Four. The Doctor Strange 2 casting also brought to life a popular fan-casting that made the rounds years prior. That said, Krasinski wasn’t the first choice to play Mr. Fantastic. According to reports, Daniel Craig was set to cameo as Reed Richards but backed out due to rising COVID-19 concerns. Though Krasinski’s appearance was a highlight, Craig’s Doctor Strange 2 cameo would have elevated the role to a much higher level.

Krasinski will always carry immense popularity based on his time as Jim Halpert on The Office, but he has recently shown his level of star-power playing the titular role of Prime Video’s Jack Ryan series and co-writing and directing A Quiet Place and its 2020 sequel, A Quiet Place Part II. Still, Daniel Craig is a bigger A-lister, and, in turn, his cameo as Mr. Fantastic would have been a much bigger deal. Craig is coming off a 15-year stint playing James Bond following his franchise departure in No Time to Die. He’s still one of the most coveted actors out there, and having him play a notable character like Reed Richards as part of Doctor Strange 2‘s Illuminati had the chance to be one of the biggest thrills in MCU history.

The appearance of Reed Richards was a surprise in its own right, but using someone like Craig would have been a major shock considering his connection to the role was cleverly kept under wraps. The news of Craig’s potential cameo seemed to come out of left field, proving he hasn’t been on the radar of MCU fans for legitimate roles. Krasinski, on the other hand, was still a pleasant surprise, but the payoff stemmed for those familiar with the fan-casting push.

Despite not playing a part in Doctor Strange 2‘s ending, the death of the Illuminati team still raised questions for the future of the MCU. It’s unclear if Krasinski will return to portray Reed Richards for the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, but it seems very likely. If Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness had embraced the element of surprise with a Daniel Craig cameo, they could have followed through with the quick kill by leaning into the notion that this was a one-and-done variant appearance. This could’ve meant embracing the multiverse while casting Krasinski as the primary variant in focus of future MCU projects. It would have been a win-win for the MCU in terms of big-name castings, but instead, it looks like the franchise is ready to tease its new Mr. Fantastic.
