Legacies Season 4 Finale Will Give TVD Series Proper Ending
CW head Mark Pedowitz reassures viewers that the Legacies season 4 finale will serve as a 'proper' ending for The Vampire Diaries spinoff.

Legacies Season 4 Finale Will Give TVD Series Proper Ending

The upcoming Legacies season 4 finale will serve as a proper ending to The Vampire Diaries series. Legacies premiered on The CW in 2018, however, many of its characters pre-date the show. Matt Davis reprises his role as Alaric Saltzman, the headmaster of the Salvatore School, who made his debut back in The Vampire Diaries season 1 over a decade ago. Danielle Rose Russell leads the cast as Hope Mikaelson, a character born on The Vampire Diaries spinoff series The OriginalsLegacies has featured guest appearances by several Vampire Diaries and Originals characters, including in a recent April episode that included several members of the Mikaelson family.

There are still three episodes of Legacies season 4 remaining. Unfortunately, the finale will also serve as the show’s conclusion after it was canceled by The CW earlier this month. Though its individual cancellation came as a surprise, viewers were more taken aback by the sheer number of series axed by the network. Several established shows including Legends of TomorrowBatwoman, and Charmed were canceled alongside Legacies. Since The Vampire Diaries series and others received the news quite late, some viewers are understandably concerned the Legacies season 4 finale won’t provide proper closure.

Luckily, it doesn’t sound like that will be the case. In a press conference ahead of the network’s Upfront presentation, CW head Mark Pedowitz (via TV Guide) provided some reassurance. Speaking generally of the shows that were on the bubble and ultimately canceled, Pedowitz said the network “encouraged all of those producers to try to treat their finales as if they could be series finales.” Talking about Legacies specifically, Pedowitz said:

I do know from a conversation that I’ve had with [creator] Julie [Plec] that there’s a perfectly proper series finale.

Pedowitz’s comments echo what Plec herself said about the Legacies finale soon after the cancellation announcement. She similarly stated that the season 4 finale also works as a series finale and even features “a couple surprises” for those who have loved The Vampire Diaries franchise since the beginning. It sounds like Legacies final episode will wrap up the show nicely, even if its cancellation did come as a shock to viewers.

Still, no matter how satisfying the finale ends up being, there’s no denying it feels like a rather abrupt end to the beloved Vampire Diaries universe that played such an important role on The CW for over a decade. Viewers likely hoped they would have an entire season to say goodbye to the world created by Plec and her collaborators. Instead, they have only a few short weeks to come to terms with not only Legacies but also the entire franchise ending. Though Pedowitz and Plec’s comments are good to hear, it remains to be seen if the finale will indeed give audiences proper closure.
