England fans claim ‘justice for Lampard’ as Germany crash out after contentious goal

England fans have joked they finally have justice for Frank Lampard's ghost goal in South Africa after Germany were dumped out of the World Cup in controversial circumstances.

Japan shocked the world, again, to incredibly top their group that also contained Germany and Spain. The Asian side beat Spain in controversial fashion as a lengthy VAR check deemed the ball not to have gone out in the build-up to the goal.

And as Germans rage at VAR, English fans have cast their minds back to 2010 – when Lampard was denied a stonewall strike, that crossed the line, and would have labelled the game.

One fan joked: "That dead ball line controversy for the Japan goal knocking Germany out feels like justice done for Frank Lampard. Yes, I’m still bitter!"

"I just know Frank Lampard is watching on with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face, justice for his goal in 2010," a second added. While a third joked: "Even if the Japanese ball was out, that is justice for Lampard, 2010."

BLOEMFONTEIN, SOUTH AFRICA – JUNE 27: Manuel Neuer of Germany watches the ball bounce over the line from a shot that hit the crossbar from Frank Lampard of England, but referee Jorge Larrionda judges the ball did not cross the line during the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Round of Sixteen match between Germany and England at Free State Stadium on June 27, 2010 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. And a fourth simply said: "After all these years. Justice for Lampard!"

Germany have now been eliminated from the past two World Cups in the group stage – having also fallen at the first hurdle in Russia.

Hansi Flick's side were able to get their job done – beating Costa Rica 4-2 in the adjacent fixture – but their opening game defeat to Japan and draw to Spain have cost them a spot in the knockout rounds.
