Romelu Lukaku has ‘worst individual performance in World Cup history’ as Belgium go out

Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku has dropped what has been dubbed the worst performance in World Cup history as Belgium's golden generation failed in their final World Cup assault.

Lukaku missed a handful of chances – with a goal all Belgium needed to advance to the knockout stages. According to ESPN, Lukaku finished his 45-minute cameo with an xG (expected goals) of 1.67, but he failed to convert the chances.

Instead, the Inter Milan man hit the post, headed over the bar, and watched the ball trickle past the post. Lukaku was left in tears as Belgium's elimination was confirmed, with Thierry Henry having to console the talisman.

"Romelu Lukaku has had more misses than Henry VIII here," a second joked. While a third tweeted: "I’m laughing so hard at Lukaku missing 7 sitters but that laughter turned to tears when I remembered we paid 100 million pounds for him!"

"I’m crying real tears at that Lukaku performance. Funniest footballer by a mile," a fourth added. While another joked: "I actually think Lukaku has had one of the worst performances I've witnessed this WC! He should have a hat trick…. At least!"

Lukaku broke down in tears at full time as Belgium finished in third, behind both Croatia and Morocco. The former Manchester United and Chelsea man was immediately consoled by Arsenal legend Henry, before putting his fist through a dugout and heading down the tunnel.

Belgium's golden generation has now seemingly missed out on its last chance to win some silverware.

Kevin De Bruyne admitted before the Red Devils jetted to Qatar the side wasn't getting any younger. Belgium finished third in Group F, and will now have to set their sites on Euro 2024.
