Romelu Lukaku was spotted in tears as Belgium's golden generation crashed out of the 2022 World Cup – possibly their last chance to win a trophy.

Belgium were dumped out of the World Cup after a poor 0-0 draw with Croatia, leaving them in third in Group F. Lukaku only played 45 minutes on Thursday afternoon, but he missed a handful of chances that would have sent the Red Devils into the knockout stages.

And as the Inter Milan man left the pitch in tears, he had to be consoled by Belgium's assistant manager Thierry Henry. Lukaku then punched the plastic board in the dugout, causing it collapse.

The 2022 World Cup was perhaps the last chance for Belgium's golden generation to win some sort of silverware – having come so close at the 2018 World Cup.

Lukaku is one of the shining stars of Belgium's ageing side, alongside Kevin de Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Eden Hazard. However, despite all their talent, the Red Devils have failed when it comes to performing on the biggest stage.

Ahead of Qatar, De Bruyne had said: "No chance [we can win], we’re too old. I think our chance was 2018. We have a good team, but it is ageing."

Belgium were uninspiring in their opening clash against Canada, but Roberto Martinez's side got the job done.

Morocco then shocked the world as Belgium limped through the 90 minutes, and another goalless display against Croatia has now sent the Red Devils home. Martinez's contract is up at the end of the year – and he's yet to commit to another deal.
