Australia's World Cup hero Jackson Irvine has apologised after his rude outburst on live TV after the Socceroos made it through to the knockout rounds.

Irvine, who was appearing on News Breakfast, said: "At the moment there won't be much enjoying going on, I'll be going straight down to start my recovery!" However, when asked if was going to have an ice bath, Irvine had the perfect response.

He joked: "Yeah literally, just freeze my b**** off for a bit, that's the way to enjoy it. No just full focus on the next one, there'll be a time to reflect… sorry I forgot I am live as well!"

Australia qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup at the expense of Denmark and Tunisia.

The Scandinavian side had been labelled as a dark horse for the competition, after they went far in the Euros last summer. However Denmark's chances of making the knockout rounds faded when Mathew Leckie notched for the Socceroos.

Leckie's strike meant Australia progressed from the group stage for the first time since 2006.

Graham Arnold, Australia's boss, told the BBC: "I'm so proud of the effort. There was a short turnaround but their effort was incredible.

"These boys come in with a great mindset. We've been working on this for the last four years about the belief, the energy and the focus. I could see in their eyes, they were ready tonight."
