The Russo Brothers Hype New Movie With Funny Chris Evans Endgame Reference

The Russo Brothers are taking a walk back in time to hype The Gray Man with a hilarious Chris Evans in Avengers: Endgame reference highlighting the major differences of roles for the actor. Evans stars in the upcoming action thriller as Lloyd Hansen, a former CIA agent who now works as an unhinged mercenary. Hansen is tasked with hunting down his former CIA colleague, Ryan Gosling’s Court Gentry, when he is made a target after discovering dark agency secrets.

Gosling and Evans are leading the ensemble cast of The Gray Man alongside Knives Out‘s Ana de Armas, Bridgerton‘s Regé-Jean Page, Iron Fist‘s Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Sam Lerner, Michael Gandolfini and DeObia Oparei. The Russo Brothers are at the helm of the action-thriller, based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name, directing on a script from Joe Russo and fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe alums Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. With a budget of $200 million, The Gray Man is one of Netflix’s most expensive original films and those behind it are looking to build anticipation for its release.

In response to a post from Den of Geek about the two breaking down the film, the Russo Brothers took to Twitter to build hype for The Gray Man. The filmmaking duo addressed their quote of wanting to cast Chris Evans as a sociopath, humorously referencing an Avengers: Endgame joke and saying they’ve turned the Captain America actor from “America’s a– to America’s a–hole.” Check out the funny reference below:

The moment the Russo Brothers are referring to from Avengers: Endgame came during the film’s Time Heist when Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark notes that Captain America’s 2012 costume was not a good look when it came to his behind, to which Ant-Man defended his idol and said “that’s America’s a–.” The future version of Captain America would later agree with Paul Rudd’s MCU hero after knocking out his 2012 self, proudly expressing “That IS America’s a–” while looking down at his former self. The Avengers: Endgame moment quickly became a viral meme shortly after the film’s release, with fans sharing various shots of Evans’ tenure as Captain America paired with his quote.

In the years since bringing his MCU time to a close with Avengers: Endgame, Evans has delivered multiple performances going against his well-known heroic persona, mostly notably that of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out in which he played a self-absorbed and crafty killer. The Gray Man looks to keep this against-type streak live for Evans as he plays the film’s unhinged villain, with the brief footage shown for the film thus far showing him chewing up the scenery as the mustachioed antagonist. The wait for Evans’ new role is nearly over as The Gray Man hits Netflix on July 22.
