Singer Omar Apollo Posts Risqué Comment To Refute ‘Queerbaiting’ Rumors

Singer Omar Apollo has reaffirmed his sexuality amid allegations of baiting queer people with the themes in his music and fashion style.

The “Stayback” crooner shared on Twitter that he was not trying to pull a fast one on the LGBTQ+ community but is honestly expressing his authentic self as a queer person in his music.

In an interview earlier in the year, he had previously stated that he was gay, explaining at the time that he had tried to be mysterious but was now laying out all his cards.

The singer was recently nominated for the Best New Artist Category for the 2023 Grammy Awards following the release of his full debut album “Ivory.”

Taking to Twitter earlier in the week, Apollo cleared the air around speculations that he was “queerbaiting” audiences by spicing up the lyrics of his songs with sensual words and phrases that pandered to same-sex love.

A fan on the social media platform had asked, “is omar apollo another queerbaiting singer? like those type “i don’t label myself let me wear cropped and paint my nails and i say i find another guy hot” cuz i like his song but i don’t like supporting straight men doing queerbating.”

The “Want U Around” vocalist replied to the message saying, “no i b sucking d*ck fr.” His risqué comment served to reaffirm his sexuality to the individual, as well as other online users who might have come across the inquiry.
A while later, Apollo added “from the back,” further clearing any lingering doubts.
In the post’s comment section, fans applauded the singer for being so “real” about his sexuality.

‘I’m Very Gay’

Earlier in the year, Apollo had openly stated he was gay during his interview with NPR while promoting his debut album, “Ivory.”

At the time, he was asked whether he preferred to express his queerness through his lyrics rather than put labels on it after some of the songs on his album were noted to have featured explicit references to men.

“I don’t really care. I feel like in the beginning, I was trying to be mysterious and stuff, but now I’m just like — I’m very gay, so I’m just like, whatever,” Apollo replied during the interview.

He added, ‘”It’s funny, every time I’m doing an interview, they’re like, ‘You don’t like to…’ I’m like, ‘Damn, do I really come off like that?’ [But no, I’m totally about it. Maybe I was trying to keep the mystique, you understand? But I don’t even care anymore.”‘

Other Artist Have Been Accused Of Queerbaiting

The allegations that Apollo could be a “queerbaiting” artist came in the wake of several other male singers being similarly accused of doing the same thing to gain more recognition among the LGBTQ+ and boost their brand.

Singer and actor, Nick Jonas, has been dogged by queer-baiting allegations following his time as a Disney star, which was further escalated by repeated gay nightclub appearances and starring in multiple gay roles in movies.

Hazy accusations of queerbaiting also tailed former One Direction star Harry Styles since he started a solo career due to his use of provocative, flashy attire, which hinted towards him being queer.

Both Styles and Jonas have garnered a strong LGBTQ+ following, although it remains unclear if they are queer or if the accusations of queer baiting are true.
