Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has hit the headlines a few times this year, with speculation that Amber Heard’s time as Mera was up following her highly-publicised defamation case loss to her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.

Depp, who split from Heard, 36, in 2016 after a year of marriage, was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, but the latter amount was was later reduced to $350,000 in keeping with Virginia law. Depp sued Heard over a Washington Post op-ed she wrote in 2018 which he believed implied he was an abuser.

Heard was awarded $2 million in her countersuit, but Depp is now challenging that. Heard is also in the process of taking further legal action, against an insurance company she thinks should pay out over the verdict.

At one point during the six-week trial rumours suggested Warner Bros had cut Heard’s role and was looking to bring in a new actress to play Mera for the follow-up to 2018’s box office hit (reports in September suggested she was still onboard).

One of the favourites to assume the role was Jason Mamoa’s former Game of Thrones co-star Emilia Clarke, who fans continue to express interest in seeing take over.

Warner Bros. Discovery has not announced any plans to recast the role — though execs did confess to considering the move.

While testifying during the Depp/Heard trial earlier this year, President of DC Films Walter Hamada revealed that there had been conversations about recasting the role due to an “issue of chemistry” between Heard and Momoa.

While fans may want Clarke join the DCEU in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, she Cis not part of the cast — though a search of the Aquaman 2 cast on Google might lead you to believe she is.
