Fans have clamored for the 3-10 Lakers to get LeBron James some help. The front office thinks reinforcements are already on the roster.

Per @TheSteinLine: The Lakers may sign reinforcements, “but the sense I got after spending the past week in L.A. is that their preference is to wait for the returns of Dennis Schröder and Thomas Bryant before making judgments that could lead to changes.”https://t.co/psbq873OtR

Marc Stein reported that the Lakers aren’t planning to make any immediate roster moves, because they’re waiting until they have their full roster.

Specifically, they’re waiting for Dennis Schröder and Thomas Bryant, who are both returning from thumb surgeries that have cost them the season.

If nothing else, it should raise the quality of the Lakers bench. The team is very light on reserve big men, so anything Bryant can provide should be an upgrade on Damion Jones, who has been a disaster offensively.

He’ll also allow Anthony Davis to play more at his preferred power forward spot, rather than always manning the pivot, as he has so far this year.

Schröder joins a veteran backcourt rotation. If Schröder can shoot 3s at his 33.5% career average, he’d be the sixth-best shooter this season, just behind noted sharpshooter Russell Westbrook.

While Schröder didn’t have a lot of suitors as a free agent this offseason, all he has to do to be an upgrade in L.A. is outplay Austin Reaves and Kendrick Nunn.

Is this going to turn the Lakers into a contender? It’s very unlikely. But it might make them less embarrassing, which is a huge step up.
