Cristiano Ronaldo fanboy Piers Morgan criticised BBC's World Cup pundits for their "fan-girling" of Lionel Messi.

Messi was the star man yet again for Argentina on his 1000th career appearance as they beat Australia 2-1 to progress to the quarter-finals last night (December 3). He scored the opener and made his side tick, earning the Man of the Match award.

After the match BBC host Gary Lineker suggested: "Shall we have a little bit of a Messi love-in?" Alan Shearer replied: "Why not?" Before Lineker continued: "Just enjoy a couple of minutes of the absolute glory and joy that he gives you on a football pitch."

Rio Ferdinand then later added: "Messi there has put on the best individual performance we've seen at this World Cup so far. By a mile."

The analysis didn't sit right with the ever-outspoken Morgan, who tweeted: "The relentless Messi fan-girling by the whole BBC punditry team is getting excruciatingly obsequious.

"Getting worried one of them might have an ‘accident’ in the studio. Calm yourselves, lads. He had a good game against an average side. See how he does against a good team."

Lineker, who opposes Morgan and believes Messi tops Ronaldo as the greatest player of all-time, hit back with a tweet of his own, writing: "Good to see you emerge briefly from deep inside the bowels of Ronaldo to express your opinion."

Morgan has a good relationship with Ronaldo, whom he recently interviewed in an explosive 90-minute tell-all chat about his return to Manchester United, which has since been brought to an end.

Ronaldo will be looking to follow Messi into the next stage of the tournament when Portugal take on Switzerland in the last 16 on Tuesday (December 6).

He scored in their opening game against Ghana but was statistically ranked in the worst XI of the group stage after a particularly poor showing in the 2-1 defeat to South Korea, which saw him substituted in the 65th minute.
